A new Indonesian horror movie about a menstruating ghost has been pulled from distribution after its producers were threatened by hardline Islamists.

Hantu Puncak Datang Bulan - The Menstruating Ghost of Puncak - was due to open on Thursday even though the country's top clerics wanted it banned over its potential to "damage the nation's morals".

"The film is filled with pornography, which indulges the libido and, based on our research, it contains violence," said Amirsyah Tambunan from the Indonesian Council of Ulemas, or MUI.

The film's producers on Thursday decided to pull the film after the hardline Islamic Defender Front, or FPI, reportedly threatened to respond to screenings with violence.

"It's been decided that screenings in Indonesian cinemas will be postponed until an undetermined time," production house spokesman Yan Wijaya told Kompas.com.

"All kinds of publicity for this film have been withdrawn."

The trailer for the film, available on YouTube, shows several scenes of young female star Andi Soraya in various stages of undress.

It also shows a man's head being sliced off, a man's head being crushed beneath a car, a man's heart being pulled from his chest and a woman's eye being gouged out with a saw.

The FPI, which wants the adoption of sharia law, has launched a series of violent vigilante attacks in the past ten years targeting nightclubs, billiard halls, the US embassy and the office of Indonesian Playboy magazine.

And everyone spends their time attacking Christians while these insane maniacs get a pass. If your gonna rail against religion as a threat, there are much better targets currently than the bible thumpers knocking on your door.

I don't give them a pass, your garden variety christians response would be less likely to involve death, these days at least.
I have always had a healthy disrespect for these morons, problem is they shout louder than the ones that aren't insane....

We don't ban films usually, just everything else.....

I think the films that remain banned here are like Salo, Bais Mois, Ken Park and i think thats about it for ones still banned....interestingly Texas Chainsaw 2 was banned up to 2006.

yeah i think it was from people thinking it wasn't banned because a dvd copy was available here for years, but it wasn't meant to be.

Interestingly also, Bad Taste was the film that brought down the Queensland censor board.....they banned it, a highly edited version was submitted and banned also....that caused the premier at the time to lose his mind at them and close them down......God growing up in Queesnland was horrible for a horror fan such as myself, it literally took me years to get a hold of a copy of dawn of the dead.

ANOES 3 was banned in Queensland ffs.

Though you did say you enjoy the M15+ QLD edited version of Re-Animator though, didn't you? Coincidentally, I just sold that very same VHS this morning to some guy in Victoria.

Indeed, well remembered, it is better, but it is 10 minutes longer also and adds in a few things that are not touched on in the normal version.....Is both versions on any dvd that we know of?

Obviously it was done by the makers of the film though and not some tit that doesn't know shit from shinola...
