Starring Andy Signore, Bruce Cronander, John Carreon, Skip Pipo, and Stephanie Medina"The Janitor" is as independent as independent films go. With several people involved wearing numerous hats (Andy Signore writing, directing, and acting or John Carreon acting and being the director of photography for example) one may think of "The Evil Dead". While this film may not be as good as "The Evil Dead", it?s still a pretty solid, and overly funny movie. The style is very Troma-esque (Lloyd Kaufman even makes a cameo), so there?s definitely a comedy, gross-out, and perverted kind of feel to the film. While I'm not necessarily a huge Troma fan, I did enjoy this film a lot.
The story itself concerns an angry janitor names Lionel who hates being disrespected and wants more for his life. A big theme is his relationship with Mr. Growbo; they're best friends. Mr. Growbo knows all about Lionel?s killer nature, but doesn't seem to think that it?s a problem. It?s a very father/son kind of thing (especially once the two have a large disagreement). Overall, the story of "The Janitor" is completely ludicrous, but that?s just the kind of film it is. I never found myself saying, "man, that doesn't make any sense; that?s not realistic". "The Janitor" isn't supposed to be realistic, it?s supposed to be fun - and fun it is.
The acting is actually fairly solid. Sure most of the characters are pretty goofy, but no one stands out as annoying (though Andy Signore?s voice that he used for Lionel got to me after a while). Not that it has anything to do with their acting abilities, but hot damn(!), Stephanie Medina and Kelly King. These two go topless in the film, and I have to say that they are some of my favorite horror breasts of all-time. They're quite busty, but they're breasts are either completely real (my guess) or their boob jobs are incredible. Stephanie Medina in particular, wow. So speaking of, as you would have already assumed, this film is chalk full of nudity, which some will like.
The special effects done by Scott Dawson (with some assistance from Lance Anderson) are superb. We get numerous bloody and violent kills. Dawson?s effects are totally believable and help make this movie a gory good time. Robbie?s death in particular was quite stellar.
All in all, while "The Janitor" wasn't amazing, but it certainly made up for it in entertainment factor. If you want a campy, ridiculous, humorous slasher, then "The Janitor" is right up your alley. Gorehounds will not be disappointed. Fans of Troma films will definitely enjoy this one.
